Tal como outros doadores estrangeiros, Tony Hamilton e a sua mulher apoiaram de todo o coração o abrigo TopuHonis, em Timor-Leste. Até que tiveram conhecimento que o padre que administrava o orfanato tinha abusado sexualmente de algumas raparigas. Em uma entrevista, Tony Hamilton contou ao Tempo Timor sobre seu apoio à instituição, a traição, a confissão do padre e a decisão de dar termo aos donativos.

Like other foreign donors Tony Hamilton and his wife wholeheartedly supported the Topu Honis shelter in Timor-Leste. Until they heard that the priest who ran the orphanage, had sexually abused girls. In an interview Tony Hamilton tells Tempo Timor about his support for the shelter, the betrayal, the priest’s confession and the decision to end donations.

Taur Matan Ruak and his wife last year in March visited the headquarter of the congregation Societas Verbi Divini (SVD, Society of the Divine Word) in East Timor to discuss the case of Richard Daschbach, a priest who was accused of sexually abusing girls in his care in Oecusse and had just been taken by the religious order to Dili to be investigated. ‘It was not my intention to give an immunity card to the priest. Simply as a human being, as a matter of respect, we visited to know what was going on, and to express our concern about the issue,’ said prime minister Taur Matan Ruak today (7 February). At the time of his visit to SVD he was a political leader and ex-president, but not yet elected as prime minister.
