Taur Matan Ruak and his wife last year in March visited the headquarter of the congregation Societas Verbi Divini (SVD, Society of the Divine Word) in East Timor to discuss the case of Richard Daschbach, a priest who was accused of sexually abusing girls in his care in Oecusse and had just been taken by the religious order to Dili to be investigated. ‘It was not my intention to give an immunity card to the priest. Simply as a human being, as a matter of respect, we visited to know what was going on, and to express our concern about the issue,’ said prime minister Taur Matan Ruak today (7 February). At the time of his visit to SVD he was a political leader and ex-president, but not yet elected as prime minister.
