Tempotimor (Dili) – A Timorese married couple detained by Indonesian security authorities and accused of carrying drugs into Indonesia are currently under intense investigation because the case involves a very wide network.

The Indonesian Ambassador in Dili, Sitorus, said: “Because of the drug case and its extensive network it was necessary to take prompt and precise action from the relavent authorities.”

"(The Timorese couple) is now still being questioned within the investigative process because the network is very broad, it is important to be both fast and accurate with this process. It was crucial to question and detain the couple immediately. Even if they had just one minute, they would go on to tell other perpetrators that the authorities were pursuing, It’s important to be fast in detaining and processing because information coming from various sources makes the main perpetrators stray away from providing truthful information which is needed for the investigation”, "Sitorus said.

"When they were arrested I immediately gave a warning that the process should be very fast accelerated, do not wait until the sun rises in the next morning. We are very grateful for the arrest, the investigation of the broad network are now the responsibility of the police and its specialists."

The Ambassador also said that their party did not want Timor-Leste to become a drug transit centre even though people suspected Timor-Leste of being a current drug transit centre.

"But we want to work together between the Indonesian government, the police, including the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to continue to provide support, because we get information that this drug problem is from external third parties to Timor-leste, with its objectives directed to Indonesia "

The Ambassador added that they also did not want the future generations of Timor-Leste and Indonesia to be damaged by illegal drugs.

"This behaviour is killing people in various aspects. Therefore, we hope that there will be better cooperation between the Indonesian National Police (POLRI) and the National Police of Timor-Leste, especially in the Border area” he said.

A high-level East Timor authority told Tempo Timor that the drugs came all the way from Africa by transit in Philippines, Indonesia-Bali and East Timor. The drug traffickers know that East Timor is a safe transit point for drugs to get into Indonesia by the land border between the two countries.
